Care Guide
Maintaining Your Studio Headphones
A good pair of studio headphones can stay with you for years — our professional DT models can last decades when properly cared for. Even so, certain parts wear faster through daily use, sweat, or UV exposure, and earpads in particular lose shape and cushioning over time, which directly affects sound quality.
The good news: simple, regular care goes a long way. With the right maintenance and timely replacement of spare parts, your headphones can stay sonically precise, hygienic, and comfortable for the long haul.
The components that show the most wear over time are the earpads, headband padding, headphone cable, and the foam or cloth filters that protect the driver from dust and moisture.
Earpads are a key factor in frequency response, sound isolation, and wearing comfort. As they wear, they can lose shape, damping, or material quality — and that change is audible almost immediately. Replacing worn earpads restores sound quality, comfort, and fit in one step.
Common signs include a loss of sound precision, noticeably reduced passive isolation, and earpads that feel hard when worn. Visually, they may appear flattened, damaged, or discoloured, and may no longer sit securely against the face.
If the headband feels soft, looks brittle, or has lost its original shape, the overall fit will likely have changed too. Watch for new pressure points on the head during use, or a fit that feels less secure than before.
Signs include a cable that feels hard or brittle and has lost its flexibility, along with intermittent loss of sound when the cable is touched near the plug or the headphone capsule.
- EarpadsWipe with a slightly damp, soft cloth only — avoid aggressive cleaners.
- HeadbandCheck for signs of material fatigue and inspect the mechanics, ensuring joints and sliders move smoothly.
- CableInspect regularly, watching for bends and stress points near the plug.
- StorageStore securely on a headphone stand and transport in a bag or case.
Small changes, big impact.
These steps take only a few minutes but significantly extend the lifespan of your headphones.
